Eating Fruit
When eating fruit, do I need to think about food combining?Well, it would be good to think about it to some extent. That way you will avoid any digestion issues.
To get the most vitamins out of the fruits you eat, don't combine fruits with cooked foods. Instead eat them before ameal or between meals. But combining fruits with uncooked vegetables, for example in a salad, will not be a problem, as raw vegetables also have short digestion times.Frederic Patenaude, a raw food/raw vegan mentor, says it is best not to combine sweet food with fatty food. So avocado should maybe not be part of a fruit salad... even though I love fruit salad with avocado, apples and pears... Many of us think about food combining. There was a visitor who asked me if avocados would combine well with citrus fruits, but now you all know they don't. But, he also says that a very small quantity of a fatty food in a sweet salad should normally not present any problems (like gas, burping etc.). So, if I change the pear, apple, avocado recipe a little it should be fine! Next time I will only add a little avocado and more pear and apple! Frederic also says... - Tomatoes are great in fruit salads because they are actually also a fruit and act that way in the body.
- Lettuce and vegetables, like celery, cucumber and so on, can also be added to fruit salads or be part of a fruit meal without any problems.
- Food combinations to avoid:
1. Dates together with nuts (so dates and cashews is not a very good combination, but is still found in many recipes...) 2. Adding oils or nuts to fruit smoothies. 3. Dried fruit (sweet) eaten with nuts (fatty) is a bad combination.
Uuups, so I guess my nuts and raisin favorite should be a no-no then. But here it should also be ok if I would only add a few (3-4) raisins and the rest would be nuts. I am sure my tunny would be ok with that :)
Something else to think about... it is best not to add many different types of fat to the same meal. For example, if you have already added nuts or some avocado to a salad, there is no need for you to add olive oil on top of that. More About Eating Fruit It takes our digestive system a very short time to digest fruit. The fruit passes from our stomach through to our small intestine in about 15-20 minutes only. That's much less time than it takes for any other kind of food. Sandwiches, pasta, meat or anything similar can stay in our stomach up to a few hours before it is ready to move on. Fatty foods stay longer than non-fatty ones. All fruit stay about 15-20 minutes in the stomach. The only exceptions are the banana, avocado, dried fruits and dates. They will digest in about 30 minutes. But remember, the digestion time also depends on how much you eat. For example, one kiwi might take 15 minutes or less to digest, but 10 kiwis cut up into a "kiwi-salad" might take just a little longer.
When is the best time to eat fruits? - The best time to eat fruits is about 20 minutes before eating anything else - but as I said above it is ok to combine fruits with vegetables like lettuce, cucumber etc - but not with any starchy stuff like potatoes though.
When you hear people saying "I can't eat fruits, I always feel bloated or sick afterwards", the reason they feel this way is because they eat fruits after a meal (as dessert) or together with concentrated foods, like a banana and a piece of bread... Fruit is always ready to pass through the stomach quite fast. If the fruit arrives to the stomach and there is already some other food there (with a longer digestion time), the fruit is blocked and cannot pass through. The vitamins and minerals can't be as easily absorbed by the body when this happens. And in some people, it can also cause an unpleasant feeling, bloating or sickness. Other people might not notice anything. But if we eat fruit before another meal or between meals, our body can take all the nutrients it needs and let the fruit continue its trip through the digestive system. Eating Fruit For Breakfast - A good tip is to eat fruits for breakfast. If you like eating other foods for breakfast too, divide your breakfast into two parts, eating fruit first. About 15 minutes later eat any other kinds of foods. This will let your body very easily absorb all the vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients, that are ready for absorption once they enter your stomach.
