Omega 3

by Anna
(Austria)

I am very interested in nutrition and how it effects our health. I would like to know more about OMEGA 3. Is it really as good for you as they say? Can I give it to my kids without risks?

Omega 3
by: Tonia

Yes, you can for sure give Omega 3 oil to your children!

Omega 3 oil has been considered healthy for a long time now. There have been quite a few studies that have shown Omega 3 fish oil to be helpful for developing brains in many ways, also good for those with A.D.H.D. Omega 3 has also shown to have a positive effect on the memory and concentration part of the brain as well as on the heart.

Now there has even been a new major Omega 3 study I read about in the magazine Kurier - the study was also published in many other magazines, like for example the New York Times, Washington Post and the Sydney Morning Herald. In that study Paul Amminger and the other researchers have been able to show that a regular supplementation of Omega 3 can reduce the risk of the development of Schizophrenia in at-risk youths.

Now that means Omega 3 must have something to it, right?

The oil in most Omega 3 supplements is cleaned before it reaches the consumer, and therefore should not contain any pollutants such as fatty fish can contain.

Some fish oil supplements tend to be a bit expensive, but the expensive ones are usually the ones that are of high purity and always follow the WHO rules.

Avoid buying everything you see in the grocery store said to be a good Omega 3 source. Like
Omega 3 eggs. Because the Omega 3 oil used to supplement these products (or to supplement the food of these hens) is normally of low quality, usually already oxidized.

Do remember that it is only the Omega 3 oil found in fish and some algae that has been proved to give these positive effects!

So the Omega 3 oils found in vegetable sources such as flax seeds and flax seed oil are not the same thing.

Flax seeds can be consumed for their other health benefits instead, such as being rich in protein, fiber, thiamin, riboflavin and niacin.
