Organic Fruits and Vegetables
Why organic fruits? About organic nutritionOrganic fruits and vegetables are grown in chemical-free soil. They are grown under very strict conditions to keep them clean and safe for us to eat. Did you know that an organic farm has to be at least 50 meters or 164 ft (54.6 yards) away from any road with traffic.
Conventional fruits and vegetables (non-organic) are normally grown in soil treated with chemicals. The plant itself is also sprayed with chemicals over and over again, to keep pests away. Now, if these chemicals are designed to kill living pests, they cannot be good for humans either. There has been incidents where people working on conventional farms have become very sick after eating freshly "sprayed" fruits and veggies. No wonder! The sprays are chemical cocktails that are definitely not edible. And now, a US cancer report/study has found that there is a much higher number of chemicals present in the food we eat than we knew before. The chemicals used in agriculture leak into the ground water, and even contaminates the water we drink... And did you know, some of the pesticides being used in conventional farming have unfortunately been shown to be brain damaging... I don't like the sound of that, you don't either, right? So why are these pesticides legal?
The fact that they are legal does not mean they are safe. Pesticides used on fruits and vegetables are tested on animals. Normally on rats. The brain of a rat is very different from the human brain. So the test results are many times inaccurate. For this reason, especially when there are kids in the house, it is important to buy organic. The brain of kids grows fast the first few years. To prevent possible damage from these neuro toxic substances, it is best for them to eat organic fruits and veggies. The peel of conventional fruits is treated to make the fruit look more shiny and keep it fresh longer. The peel is also many times colored. For example, the orange peel is usually colored with a color called red azo dye. This dye is also called Allura Red, Food Red 17, C.I. 16035, FD&C Red 40. Organic vs. Conventional Fruit - Organic Fruits and Vegetables Debate
The azo dyes were banned in for example Sweden some years ago because they were considered too toxic to be used in food. But they have been allowed now again due to new rules within the EU. There has also been some debate in the media about whether organic vegetables and fruits contain more vitamins and antioxidants than traditionally grown produce. The conclusion now seems to be that they do contain a little more of everything, vitamins, antioxidants, essential fatty acids and minerals.
So should we buy organic food, organic vegetables and fruits and for example organic fruit juice? I would say we should for sure do so.
